Leave our legacy 👍

Over the last few weeks the year 8s have stuck ther heads together to come up with an idea to "leave our legacy" at waiwera South school! We all decided to paint the sandpit wall, because over the term we have been studying "Banksy" the street artist! This turned out really well and we all did a fabulous job!

Quadrathon!

On Wednesday the 2nd of December we had the annual quadrathon at school! This is where we swim, bike and do two runs! There was more than 190 entries, it was around 27 degrees! ☀️  everyone did so well in this event throughout the day!

Sports Activator

Yesterday (Monday the 23rd) Rory came to school to teach us tennis skills. We completed relays where we would run to the net pick up 1 of four balls and hit it over the net. Next he taught us about hitting the ball correctly, he hit the ball over the net to us and then we would hit it back. If we did something wrong he would help us showing us how to stand or hold the racket. We then played a game like 4 square which was a lot of fun.

Graffiti art

Over the past 2 weeks we have been studying the artist Banksy! He is an artist from Europe and does lots of street art that uses the envorment to share messages around political and social issues. He uses silhouette images with a bit of added colour in his paintings! Here is some art inspired by Banksy that we have created about pet day! This is what they turned out like ⬇️

Pet day 2015

On Wednesday the 21st we had pet day! Pets started arriving at 12:00pm and getting sorted into their places. We had to stay with our pets all day because judging started 1:00. Then we had a parade where everyone showed off their pets before all the winners were announced. Overall everyone had a great day and the day went well.

Drink Driving - By Ally

For Inquiry, I looked into Drink driving. This involved researching, questioning and A LOT of editing. This took me four days to work on, and complete! Below, you can find my slide on Drink Driving. I have also made a Pic Collage of Drink Driving, and a small iMovie trailer, presenting how drink driving is bad.

Safety inquiry! - By Emma

Last term we looked into safety as a class before splitting off into our own individual projects. We each chose a type of safety before thinking of a question we'd like to dig deeper with. I chose transport/car safety and my main questions were 'why is 16 the legal age to gain a drivers license?' And 'why do vest only com in yellow and orange?' I made a slideshow displaying all the research I had done on one of my questions and then I 'took action' by writing a letter to John Key to change the legal driving age to 18.

Safety slides!!

My inquiry was about water safety. I looked at rips and currents and how to keep safe around them. I wrote a letter to kaka point lifeguards to ask them why there weren't lifeguards on every beach, then made a slide and a pow-toon. Below is my slide on Rips and Currents. By Lucy

My inquiry focused on Internet safety and bullying. I looked at how we can stop cyber bullying and how we can enjoy the Internet without being worried. I then made a Google Slide, Pic Collage and a Pow-toon. Below is my Slide. By Taylor

I inquired about farm safety and focusing on quad safety and tips on farming. I made a poster, Google slide and a sign to put up around the school so that people are aware of why we have rules on farms. Below is my Slide with tips on how to stay safe!

Motorbike Safety - By Brayden

For my Inquiry I looked at  motorbike safety and why there are so many rules involved these days. I believe there are too many rules and I decided I would give you some of my own safety tips.

What is the safest dishwashing liquid - By Sam

In term 3 I inquired into dishwashing liquid and what the safest kind is to use. I began by asking my classmates what kind of dishwashing liquid they use and found that most people use finish tablets. I then researched what the safest kind is and have found out that Eco auto dishwashing tablets are the safest dishwashing substance to use.

Folk dancing

We have been learning different folk dances in class and have been working hard practicing our very own dances we have made up in groups. We are presenting these at Assembly on Friday which will be held at the Waiwera hall at 2:15pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Senior Room bucket filler challenge!

The Senior Room has been working hard at being 'bucket fillers' over the past few weeks. Every time someone is kind to someone else, they are rewarded with a certain amount of money. At the end of each week Miss Mosley counts the money collected. The person who receives the most becomes the cup winner for that week and they are able to pick a prize.

Congratulations to our Fantastic Bucket Fillers from the past three weeks Lucy, Amy and Taylor

Rugby World Cup shirt designs

The senior room have been learning about the Rugby World Cup and have had a go at designing their very own World Cup rugby jerseys.

PCT challenge

Last Wednesday Beth, Lachie, Ally, and Tom went to the PCT (Physical Competency Challenge) at the Balclutha Rec Center. The PCT challenge is a fitness test the police do (within a certain time limit) to see if they are fit enough to become Police Officers.
Our team was up first out of 19 teams and completed the test in 3:21. This positioned us 5th in the overall competition which was a fantastic effort! Lawrence was the fastest team and came 1st in the competition. Considering we were first up, and we had no idea how to do it, we are proud of our effort! We all had a fun day because at the end, we all went to Ally's grandparents shop to get an ice cream! Thanks to Warren for transporting us to the Rec Center, and shouting us the ice creams.

Clued up kids

Wednesday the 29th of July the year 6 students went to the Balclutha Recreation Centre for Clued up Kids. This was a programme that taught us all about safety and how we can keep safe in a range of different situations. We had a great time moving around the different stations listed below.

  • Relax kids - taught us some special relaxation techniques.
  • Bike safety - all about following signs and road rules.
  • Water safety - here we put on life jackets on and went on the rescue boat.
  • First Aid - role played people being hurt fixing them.
  • Gun safety - shown different guns and the 7 golden rules with gun safety.
  • Dog safety - they taught us a rhyme, "if there's a dog on its on leave it alone."
  • Fire safety - we had to go in a pitch black tunnel following the stop, drop and crawl procedure get out quickly.
  • Motor Bike safety - learning you have to be 16 years old to ride a full sized motorbike.
  • Earthquake safety - we went into a trailer and had to follow the procedure of drop stop and hold.
As a group our favourite station we visited was Fire safety, going through the pitch black tunnel was a lot of fun. Overall it was a great day, we learnt a lot about safety in a range of situations. We have to say we are definitely more clued up!
