Tony Tourell Memorial Golf Tournament

Today we went to the Clinton Golf Course to play in a golf competition with Clutha Valley School. We played 9 holes. We drove the balls towards the green, then we would chip our balls from whomever's ball was closest to the green we would then put it into the hole. Lachie got a ball for being the best in the team we all got a Maxfli golf ball for winning the competition. Thank you to Hamish McCallum for transporting and supervising us this morning.

Lachie, Brayden, Alex and James.

On the last day of winter, we went to the Clinton Golf Club for the tournament held in memory of Tony Tourell. We had a really fun time even though we lost.

Holly got nominated for the best player in the team, for getting good drives, 3 holes and carrying the bag. Koben put his ball in the creek, Koben kept on hitting the ball off track and hitting the ground. David also hit the ground a lot. Ashley put it down a big BIG ditch and David had to get it out. It took at least 3 maybe, 4 times to hit it out.

Thank you to Mrs Dalley for transporting and supervising us throughout the tournament, we really appreciate it.

Artist Visit - Wayne Edgerton

Today we had Wayne Edgerton an artist come and help us with some observational drawings as this is what our art focus is this term. He demonstrated how to draw a sketch of a bottle with adding shading and hatching.
Then it was our turn to draw. Wayne gave us advice on how to make our drawings better. We learned about composition, which is where things sit on the page.
He told us that mistakes make us better, (not just in our artwork).
Wayne donated a painting of his own to the school and we are very appreciative of his gift. We will have to find somewhere to display this for everyone to see.
Thanks heaps for coming Wayne, we really enjoyed your visit and learned heaps!

Observational Drawing

Today we did some observational drawing, which is drawing what you see.

We armed ourselves with a pencil, a piece of paper, a chair and a magazine, ready to find the best place to draw.

When we had found where we wanted to draw we sat down and got started. We had to use our spatial awareness to scale our view down from the actual size to an A4 piece of paper. This was very challenging.

Koben had a visitor to help with his drawing.

David had a lot of trees to draw.

Ally's drawing was anything but rubbish!!

Olympics Sports Afternoon

The sun was shining and it was a perfect day for our Olympics Afternoon with Warepa and Clinton.

The students were mixed up into different countries with students from each of the schools. At each school the students participated in a variety of different sports.

At Warepa the senior students participated in petanque, netball and touch. The event was started with the Olympic Oath being read. We were also greeted with a Maori welcome song performed by the Warepa senior students.

This was a fabulous day and we have had lots of positive feedback about it! Thank you very much to all the parents who helped out with transport to Warepa!

Grant Milne League/Touch Visit

On Friday we were fortunate to have Grant Milne come and visit us for some league and touch training.

We worked a lot on our defence and working as a team on defence. Grant also helped improve our attacking skills and tactics of how to get around a defender.

We really appreciated Grant coming to Waiwera South to help us improve skills and we are looking forward to using these skills in our touch teams this year.

Cross Country Practice

Cross country practice is in full swing! It was a nice morning for running today, not too hot(no fear of that!!) and not freezing cold (for a change!)

It has been awesome to see children getting faster at their running and completing more laps in the 15minutes of running! We will have people getting their gold medals in no time!

Sports Activator- Basketball

It was a very chilly Waiwera morning for sports activator today, but it wasn't long until the Senior Room were all warmed up and ready for a basketball session with Greer.

We practiced our dribbling, passing, defending and shooting. It was great to see how well our students listened to Greer and they all tried their best to improve their already pretty good basketball skills.

Dance Class

Today was our first inquiry dance session with Kayleigh. We are excited about learning a variety of dances from the 1930's right up to the present day. The students had a lot of fun learning new dance moves and seeing the progression of dances through the decade.

We are looking forward to continue practising our dances with Kayleigh!

Olveston and Toitu Whole School Trip

We had a fantastic day in Dunedin today, learning all about life in the olden days! Olveston Historic House was incredible. It was amazing to see all the antique things inside the house. Some children commented saying they thought they would quite like to live there someday! Our trip to Toitu was very interesting as well. The children went on a hunt around the museum to find transport and technology from the olden days and draw them onto their timelines. This was a great activity to see how transport and technology has changed over time. Check out the Photo Peach below Olveston and Toitu Trip on PhotoPeach

~Olympics Madness~

The start of the Olympics during the weekend has sparked a lot of interest in the Senior Room! We are following all events and stories very closely.

On Monday we wanted to share our support to the NZ athletes and we did this by writing a message to them on the NZ Olympics App.

This morning while we were busy doing their literacy and maths activities we watched the bronze medal match and the final of the woman's sevens.

We are looking forward to all the updates over the next week and a half.

GO KIWIS!!

Careers Speaker- Kayleigh Broad

Today we were lucky enough to have Kayleigh Broad come in and talk to us about her career in the performing arts! It was great to hear about the variety of aspects there are to Kayleigh's career. She teaches dance and drama, and she also a photographer. You can check out her website at milkandhoneyphotos.com.

Kayleigh studied at the Water Front Theatre School in South Africa. She studied part time for two years and full time for 4 years. Kayleigh's time the Theatre School was very full on, it wasn't only a lot of theory work but it was also very physically demanding. From Monday to Saturday she would study from 9:00am until 9:00pm most days. Kayleigh said her job is very rewarding but to achieve at a high standard you have to work very hard and persevere.

We really appreciate Kayleigh coming in to talk to the Senior Room.

James was very fortunate to win the draw for a Milk and Honey Performing Arts Hoody!
