Peer Mediators update

Yesterday we had some more peer mediator training. We started the session with a trust activity where students could choose to do a trust fall off the desk. We had everybody involved in catching or helping the person falling in some way.

After this we had some role playing in groups with some common scenarios that our mediators might come across.

Sports Activator - Rippa Rugby

With the Rippa rugby tournament fast approaching we have been getting in some training to help us do well in the tournament! Yesterday (Wednesday) we had Greer come in for a skills and games session with all the classes.

The Senior Room played some invasion games for their warm up and then we were into the drills and skills. We worked on ripping rips off other players in a couple of other games. Finally we played a game where we were put in two teams and Greer would call out a number, that many people from each team had to play a mini game. Each team had 3 rips to try and score a try. Then it would restart and Greer would call another number.

Here are some pictures and videos from the session:

Morning Programme - Kiwiana

Yesterday (Wednesday) we were very lucky to have some yummy treats brought into the class to show some kiwiana icons. Holly got up very early to make a delicious Pavlova and Alex kindly brought in some already made Hokey Pokey ice creams for everybody.

We also had Bree sharing her morning programme about Kiwiana. She brought along some Pounamu (greenstone) necklaces of hers and her mums. Bree talked about the significance of these necklaces and what their meanings are. She also said about how they need to be blessed before they can be worn.

New Tables

We are very thankful for the new table the school has bought for the Senior Room. It's another great piece of furniture for us to be able to work at.

Morning Programme - Instructions

At the moment we are focusing on instructional/procedural writing. For morning programme this half of the term we have the topic of "Instructions"to help us with this.

This morning we had Holly teaching us how to plait 3 pieces of string. This was quite a tricky tasks for some of our students so Holly had to clarify her instructions a lot to try and help the students with their plaiting.

Peer Mediators

On Friday we began our Peer Mediator training in the Senior Room. Peer Mediators will be assisting the staff in dealing with conflict in the school grounds. Their training will take 4 weeks and we hope to have the peer mediators up and running by week 4 of this term. All Senior Room students will be trained as a peer mediator, even if they might not necessarily be a peer mediator this year. Everyone in the Senior Room will be involved in our Peer Mediator Programme in some way, shape or form. This is a great leadership opportunity for our students.

During our training on Friday we discussed what conflict is and destructive and constructive ways of dealing with conflict. It was decided that we need to deal with conflict in a constructive way to have a positive outcome. This will help our peer mediators when they have to sort of conflict in the playground.

Below are some of the ideas that the students came up with for dealing with conflict constructively.
