Sports Activator- Rippa Rugby

Last Thursday we had Greer extending our skills for the Rippa Rugby Tournament.

It was great to see the sun out shining after a few days of wet and cold weather. We got straight into it with a game of seaweed where fast running and stepping were keys to winning. Next we worked on our passing. We practiced passing from both sides focusing on using the power from our hips. We then played a fun game where we followed Greer's actions until she said "ball"! Then it was a race to see who could grab the ball first. It was a lot of fun and we all showed our competitive streaks! We also spent time practicing our stepping and dodging. Then it was time to put all our skills together with a game of rippa. It was a fast paced game and we found that teamwork was an important part of winning. We look forward to using these skills next week in Balclutha at the rippa tournament.

Health-Kia Kaha

Today we finished our second of our two Kia Kaha sessions with Constable Gordon. She has taught us a lot about the way we talk to people and treat each other, both in person and online.

Cyber bullying is becoming more and more frequent across the world and we learned strategies to deal with this type of bullying which included; screenshot or save any evidence, not replying or deleting and messages and tell someone about it. also if you are bystander help the victim by telling an adult and standing up to the bully.

We are very grateful to have had Constable Gordon in to take us for lessons and we are sure we will   keep learning about anti bullying in the following lessons we have in class.

Hui Ako Art

On Wednesday we all joined up for Hui Ako. In this session we were asked to design what we thought The Bird Woman looked like. We discussed what features she would have like; claws, feathers, scary eyes and a beak were some of the suggestions. The art work looked amazing and each bird woman looked different from the next. These drawings will help us decide what costumes The Bird Woman will wear.

Careers Speakers- Brigid Clinton ~Lawyer~

We were lucky enough today to have Brigid Clinton from O'Malley & Co. Lawyers come and talk to the seniors about what being a lawyer involved.

We asked really good questions to find out more about her career. She told us what happened in the courtroom, what kind of lawyers for, how long you have to be in University for and also told us that she didn't know she wanted to be a lawyer when she left high school.

We found it interesting that she has talked to people that have had all sorts of problems going on in their lives and tried to help them through it.

ICT Apps

Welcome back to term 2! Make sure you keep checking the blog every week for updates of what has been happening in the Senior Room.

This afternoon the Senior and Middle room joined up to play around with some educational chrome apps to enhance and support their learning. Students could pair up or go solo while searching the Webstore for apps on their chromebooks. Students had to add the app to their computer so they had to be sure it was going to be worthwhile. They looked at reviews written by other people who had used the app and also the description of the app to choose whether the app was appropriate. Students did some investigating of the app and made sure they understood how to use the app properly.

Once the students were 'experts' on their apps, we then came back as a class and went through the wide variety of apps that we had found. Students then chose an app they wanted to find out more about and we split off into smaller groups. The person who had found the app was now the teacher to the small groups if their app was one that got chosen.

It was a rewarding experience for the children and hopefully they will be able to use the apps they found today and will continue to find to help support and enhance their learning.
