Kiwi Inventors - Inquiry Presentations

This afternoon the Senior Room presented their inquiry presentations about What Makes A Kiwi Inventor. We had a wide variety of topics and questions that were researched. It is always really great to see the outcome of a lot of hard work. Well done to all students for their presentations. We still have two students to present their projects on Monday.

Health - Food Nutrition

For the first 3 weeks of term 3 our health topic is Food Nutrition. Our activity this week was to cut out a number of foods and put them into the 6 food groups on the food pyramid. This was a very beneficial activity to do for the class so they could see what foods they should be eating more often than others. This topic is going to link in with our Life Education Bus visit in week 3.

Morning Programme Term 3 2017!

Morning Programme starts on Monday 31st July - Week 2. See the timetable below for your topics. :)

Maths - Angles

Over the past two weeks for maths we have had a focus on angles. We have learnt different types of angles and have begun learning how to measure angles with a protractor. Yesterday we produced some artwork using our name and measuring angles. These look very cool on our wall and it is amazing how we can do maths with using just our names!

Inquiry update - Kiwi inventors

We are getting very busy finishing off our Kiwi Inventors Inquiry projects. We have a wide variety of inventions happening in the classroom and it has been great to see some innovativeness shining through in some of the projects. We have inventions about lollies, fidget spinners, shearing handpieces, cakes, futuristic TVs and flying cars to name a few. I am looking forward to seeing the finished prototypes that are being made.

CLASS-ified - School Kit

Today we skyped our class that we were matched with through School Kit. We had no idea where this school was in NZ, so we had to use our questioning and mapping skills to narrow it down. We each had a role in the process. The Ambassador (Lucy) had to ask the questions, The Director (David), made sure all of us were on task and not making too much noise so Lucy and the rest of us could hear the questions and answers. Some of us were the Responders. We had to use Google Maps to find what schools were in the areas and then the Detectives had to write down questions from our findings for Lucy to ask the other school. We also had reporters that took photos for us for our blog post.

We asked a lot of really good questions to make it easier for us to find out where our school was. The school we were matched with was Glenfield Intermediate School in Auckland.

We are hoping to do some collaborative work with this school in the future!

Digital Dynamos Afternoon

Yesterday we held our own Digital Dynamos afternoon. Our four experts: James, Lucy, Maddie and Julienne ran two workshops each. The rest of the students booked into the two workshops that interested them. There was a lot of experimenting and problem solving with each of the programmes that were on offer. We had workshops on Bitmoji, Sploder, Tagul/Word Clouds, Incredibox and Soundstation Studio, Spritebox, Code.org and Stop Motion Animator.  It was a very successful afternoon and we hope the students can now teach others about the apps and programmes they were learning about.

Fire truck visit!

Yesterday we had Maurice, John, Darrell and Noodle visit us with the Waiwera South Fire Brigade truck. It was very interesting to see what appliances were on and inside the truck. We were lucky enough to sit in the truck and have a go at using the water hose. Ashley had some practice at rolling up the hose...maybe he will be a future fire fighter!! Darrell got dressed up in the Breathing Apparatus and showed us how it works and why it is an essential piece of equipment.

At the end we had question time and there were a lot of great questions that came from the students.

We would like to thank the men for coming in and showing us the fire truck. We really appreciated it.
